In 1905 Christian Dior was born in Granville, Normandy a sea side town off the coast of France. His family had hopes of him becoming a diplomat but Christian always loved the art world and sketching. After finishing school he opened a small gallery were he sold art by many contemporary artist. Due to a family disaster were his father lost the family business he was forced to close the gallery and work for someone else.

From 1938 he worked for Robert Piguet and later joined the fashion house were he and Pierre Balmain were the primary designers. Then is 1945 he went into business for himself were he was backed by Marcel Boussac the world renowned cotton fabric magnate.

In 1947 Dior came out with his new line called Corolle which was truly a new look for the times. Carmel Snow the editor in chief of Harpers Bazaar gave the line the name, “New Look”. His look was very different from anything else at the time. The boxy shapes of recent World War II were gone and his new look were in.

Dior's new looks were feminine with boned bustier style bodices and fitted waist and petty coats. His dresses faired out and gave faltering shapes to the calves and ankles. At first there was negative discussions because his garments took so much fabric because people were used to a single dress and suit fabrics during the War. But as soon as War time shortages were over then his garments became an instant success.

The new look revolutionized women's dress and re-established Paris as the center of the fashion world after World War II.

After Christian Dior died, in 1957 Yves Saint-Laurent took over as head of The Dior Fashion House and continued until he had to leave because of mental health issues. Then Mark Bohan took over the Dior Label in the 60's and he instilled his conservative style in the collection until 1988. Then Italian Designer Gianfranco Ferre took over as head designer until 1995 under the direction of Diors only child, John Christian Dior.

Dior continued to open new boutiques in cites around the world such as Las Vegas, Hollywood, New York and Paris to name a few. The Dior Label was not only a hot branded fashion designer company but they started to manufacture there own product.

The Dior label added Shoes, Perfumes, Hats , Scarves and many other accessories to its line. Dior is a staple in the worlds of Gowns and Handbags.

Due to the popularity and success of the Dior line the gowns and handbags are replicated in cheap factories in China and are sold at flea markets and online auctions.
